Does anyone know of a FREE online medical coding refresher website? I graduated from coding school in 2006 and would like to take a board certification test but I have been out of school for so long (3 years) I am not confident in taking the test. It is a very expensive test and you are only allowed to take it twice before you have to pay to take it again. It does not make sense for me to pay and take the course all over again. That would be a waste of money. Any advice on what to do before taking the test would be greatly appreciated.
Where can I ask questions to doctors online for free? First off, I know not to get my medical advice online, and to be examined by a real doctor, but that's going to take a while. I figure someone online might have more information at their disposal and be able to help me until I can get to a doctor. I have been having the WORST six years of my life. I'm 20, female, and I feel like my entire body is shutting down, little by little. Any links you guys can give me? I really would like to post my symptoms (/vent) and have someone take me seriously - without saying it's all in my head (physical proof says it's not). I'd like to get a diagnosis before I'm 40.

I am in need of medical advice.? Does anyone know of a free, online site that can answer medical questions? It seems that there is a lot of false use of the word free. Every site (for an hour) I have gone to has either payment after you've spent time asking...or they want you to sign up for some offer... Even webmd let me down. If you have suggestions I would be grateful. Thanks

Need DECORATING MAGIC!! Online help? Is there anywhere online you can show a picture of a room and receive opinions from decorators? I mean you can get free medical advice and much more - maybe you can get free decorating advice too! I am pathetic - can plan a wedding for 300, but can't choose a paint color to save my life - or furniture - or accent pieces etc etc.... Great Idea! I think I can put a photo on Photobucket and can paste a link to that?! Problem with places like Sherman Williams is the software they have, where you can paint your own room, doesn't really look "real" and most of them make you use photo's of their rooms, which of course look nothing like mine. Thank you for answering!
I want to build a free helpful website for everyone? I want to build a helpful website for everybody free of charge? I want to build a website that can be very helpful to most people and is free of charge. The website would basically contain free medical advices from a certified MD and surgeon for any one who has questions (answers are given within 8 hours or in extreme circumstances 24 hours). Not only that, the website also will contain free writing essays service at least for the first two weeks. Since writing essays is time consuming, it can't stay forever free but the service will be 90 % cheaper than any other website. Any kind of essays ranging from science research papers to philosophy papers can be written by a professional writer. I will also provide a service on any graduate school information and their exams such as medical school, MCAT, pharmacy school, PCAT...etc. I realize that not everybody can afford to go to doctors for questions that can be solved online and I also realize that not every student can always get the help they need to write essays. Since we don't want to encourage laziness and make students stop working, we will require that students provide an outline or an essay written out to the best of their ability and from there, we can always correct it and write it in a professional matter. And there are a lot more services that I can't list all in here. The website will depend mainly on donations and Ads from sponsors but I want to ask all of you if you think this can be successful. Will I be able to collect enough donations to run the website and pay the people who run the website with me? Do you have any other ideas or tips that you can give me? P.S I'm a senior in college majoring in biochemistry, have a 4.0 GPA, and applying to pharmacy school. The second member is a professional writer with a masters in English. The third member is a certified MD and surgeon who is willing to just help. The fourth member is the website designer. Kai- you missed my point. No website offer free service to your question if it isn't provided on the internet somewhere by itself. I meant to offer a free chatting service to ask any question you might have. Or in case the member is not online, emails can be sent to him/her. Thank you for your response though! Yea free chatting service but will any one answer all your questions and provide you help for free? They might direct you to the right place but that's about it. If there are websites like you are saying, please provide them.

I'm making a multi-purpose website because I'm trying to help as many people as people in different areas. I'm not really looking to gain much money from this website for myself because I'm going to school to get a good job that makes good money. Also, I did not mean that online consultation by any means can substitute real doctor diagnosis and advice and I was going to write it as disclaimer in my website. I meant that general advices on things like nutritions, diets, simple illnesses can be said online. But if a condition needs real doctor, the patient will be informed immediately. Also, I will place sponsor Ads in the site to get more money so that the website can run and remain free of charge. As for writing, I may have explained it in a wrong way but I never meant that a whole essay will be written from scratch for someone. The person has to try first and then give it in for correction free of charge.
Are there websites where I can talk to a live nurse or doctor? I am having some symptoms and I would like to be able to talk to a live nurse or doctor online for free. I once came across a website where you could talk to nurses live online but I have not been able to find that website again. Do you know of any good medical/ambulance training videos? I'm trying to find some good videos, preferably free and online, to watch while I'm doing the ironing and things (exciting stuff I know). I'm a student paramedic just looking to do a bit of extra studying when I can. Anything on anatomy and physiology, cardiac, ECGs, trauma, just about anything really would be really good. Had a search myself but couldn't find much so any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Advice on a career in Medical Billing and Coding? I am considering a career in Medical Billing and Coding---does the profession pay relatively well? From what I've researched online, the pay can vary. I received my BA in Liberal Studies from a well ranked private school--worked for the university for approx three years, and now I'm an Administrative Assistant for a reputable law school. However, the pay is not great---started off at $29,000; ended at $41,000; and my current position pays $35,000 a year, only with a cost of living increase (3%) at the end of each cycle. Through my university I can take classes for free (taxed after a certain percentage)and can earn a certificate in Medical Billing and Coding. I was also recently admitted into a Master's Program (Teaching)---but am concerned with the law pay and little advancement. To conclude, I'm looking for some advice now that the facts are on the table! Thanks!

Where can my mother get free diabetic testing supplies? She is 50 and just found out she has diabeties. She does not have medical insurance where she works and is not on medicare or medicaid. I have done a little research about this online and everything I found, you had to have insurance or be on medicare. She has neither, and the test strips she needs cost $50 a pack. With the medications she is already paying for, it could create a hardship. Thanks for any advice you might have.

Where can i get vicodin online? ok - Here's the deal. I recently lost my job and all of my medical benefits. I suffered a serious arm injury not too long ago, and was rx'd vicodin for the pain and will be needing it for about another 60 days. Well, I have just run out, and now that I don't have my insurance anymore, I am kind of at a loss of what to do. My dr will not see me if I don't have insurance. I know there are many online sites that are total scams and a waste of time/money and I promise you that I'm only on here to see if anyone has some advice for me? I have heard that some online sites will give you a free dr consultation and then rx'd you the vicodin. I am still looking for a new job which I hope the benefits will start soon. But until then, I don't know what to do. yikes, ok - thanks for the info. I don't feel comfortable asking the question because i dont want people to think I am some junkie just trying to find some drugs. I had heard about ordering some meds online, but if it's all a scheme and may get me in trouble, then I am not gonna do it obviously. Appreciate the advice.

Eating disorder advice, PLEASE anyone help? I want to apologize ahead of time for this being so long, I just had to vent out my feelings. Please if anyone has advice on this... I need it more than ever. I simply have noooo idea where to turn I am so lost. Maybe it is a little pathetic to be so desperate for some comforting advice I turn to this website, but I really do not know where to turn. A little back ground info, I am a 20 year old female, I have had an eating disorder for now 2 years. It used to be horrible 2 years ago. I lost so much weight to the point of my ribs showing and doctors wanting to put me in an inpatient hospital. After crumbling so terribly, with the help of medication and my team of doctors, I recovered, or so I thought. After eating normally again, I naturally gained weight. A few months ago I was in a really dark place, my depression came back and then followed the eating disorder. Since then I have tried my HARDEST to fight it. It seems the more I fight the stronger the hold it gets on me. I am falling so bad with this... it is back heavily. I eat less and less and exercise more. I am getting constant panic attacks when I even give food a thought. My appearance makes me sick to my stomach. Today all I had to eat was a half bowl of dry special K cereal. I ran 5 miles to burn everything off. I am soooo hungry right now but because I did not work out yesterday I am "punishing" myself. I know I am sick and I want help so very bad. I am in pieces just writing this. Yes I know my thoughts are completely irrational and if I eat a little more I will still be loosing weight but when I try to consume more food I get terrible panic attacks. I feel like I am back where I was 2 years ago and frankly it is scaring the hell out of me. I feel this just sucking the life out of me and I have no where to turn. As for the doctors, therapy and medication that helped me before, the state took me off medical insurance once I turned 19 and I cannot afford to pay for a plan. My mom is out of work so she cannot pay for it either and without health insurance the appointments and medication are so very expensive. We cannot afford any of it. I have joined every online support group I have found. They do not really help me too much because sometimes it will take days for someone to reply and a lot of times people do not reply to my posts. I have tried to look up free support groups in my area and no luck. I know the next best thing would be my family/friends. Now the thing about them is my mother, even though I love her dearly, she is not a good support system at all. Last time I was having a panic attack over this she shrugged her shoulders at me and told me to leave her alone because her "show" was on. I have tried to explain how that crushed me and how I need her more than ever and she just makes up excuses. I do not really have friends I can turn to unfortunately. As for my boyfriend who I know cares enough to listen to me, he is in Iraq in the army right now and every time I bring this up to him he gets soo worried. He has enough to worry about now, I do not want my drama to burden him. So like I said, I feel completely trapped and lost. Please if any one has advice on what I can do, I will appreciate anything. I am so desperate to recover before I am in a grave because of this. Also, if anyone wants you can email me personally - brittanymeglino@yahoo.com
I'm 26 and tired of being a virgin. Advice? I'm a 26 year old guy, and I've never done anything with a girl, other than an occasional date that goes nowhere. I've never had a second date, never kissed a girl, never cuddled, never had sex. And I am incredibly sick of it all. I've tried everything, it seems. Trying to be their friend hasn't worked. Asking them out the frist time I meet them doesn't work. Asking them out after knowing them for a little while doesn't work. Online has always failed, whether the site is a pay site or a free site. Coworkers and classmates have never provided me with any luck. My friends don't want to set me up with anyone, saying that I just have to find the right one. That my friends won't help is especially frustrating. I hate it SO much, and I really have no idea what to do. I have a very healthy sex drive, so having no outlet for it sucks. And having nobody to have an emotional connection with makes me feel kind of empty. I'm not religious, so that isn't a hindrance. I don't ask out a girl every day, so I don't think I come across as desperate. Basically, I am going into my professional medical career, where I will soon be working ~80 hours a week until I am finished with my residency. That's 4-5 years of no longer even having time, on top of all the other problems. So if things don't change by the end of the year, I will be a single, unkissed virgin at 31. PLEASE give me some kind of advice.

How to tell parents that I'm in an online relationship without them freaking out? Alright, first off, if you don't agree with the concept of online relationships or the like, please for the love of god just skip this over. I don't need to hear how stupid you think I am or how much you disapprove because I won't hear any of it. Now, I met a girl through a common interest (Rping) back in Sept of 07. At first we just talked about the RPing but back in mid March I suddenly realized I'd fallen for her. I told her and, lucky me, she felt the same! I love her to death and we talk every day. We really want to meet in person but have no idea how to tell our parents. I'm really just looking for advice on how we can tell our parents to at least let us give it a try. We're both 18 and I'll be going to college at the end of summer, but due to some medical conditions she's stuck at home with her parents for at least another two years. Even being able to meet in person once a month would be great! Please, try and just think of ways we could convince our parents. Feel free to make assumptions about our relationship if you fell that'll help your ideas. I call her almost every day and leave a message, and she has a webcam so I can see her, but I don't have one and don't know how to convince my parents to let me get one without telling them the real reason I want one. Though I think it would help them maybe be a little more accepting of it if they knew we could see each other and know we are who we say we are.
Would someone plz post an Accomplishments BIO of OBama as I am of Hillary? This is only a short list of the good she has done, starting back in her early life. You can pull it up by bringing her history BIO up online. There is much much more. Early life Raised in a politically conservative household,[11] at age thirteen she helped canvass South Side Chicago following the very close 1960 U.S. presidential election, finding evidence of electoral fraud against Republican candidate Richard Nixon,[12] and volunteered for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater in the U.S. presidential election of 1964.[13] Her early political development was shaped most strongly by her energizing high school history teacher, who got her to read Goldwater's classic The Conscience of a Conservative[14] and who was, like her father, a fervent anti-communist, and by her Methodist youth minister, like her mother concerned with issues of social justice; with the minister she saw and met civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in Chicago in 1962. Rodham attended the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami, where she decided to leave the Republican Party for good; she was upset over how Richard Nixon's campaign had portrayed Rockefeller and what Rodham perceived as the "veiled" racist messages of the convention That summer, she worked her way across Alaska, washing dishes in Mount McKinley National Park and sliming salmon in a fish processing cannery in Valdez (which fired her and shut down overnight when she complained about unhealthy conditions). Law school During her second year, she worked at the Yale Child Study Center,[34] learning about new research on early childhood brain development and working as a research assistant on the seminal work, Beyond the Best Interests of the Child (1973).[35][36] She also took on cases of child abuse at Yale-New Haven Hospital,[35] and volunteered at New Haven Legal Services to provide free advice for the poor.[ and volunteered at New Haven Legal Services to provide free advice for the poor.[34] In the summer of 1970, she was awarded a grant to work at Marian Wright Edelman's Washington Research Project, where she was assigned to Senator Walter Mondale's Subcommittee on Migratory Labor, researching migrant workers' problems in housing, sanitation, health and education;[37][38] Edelman would become a significant mentor to her.[38] In the late spring of 1971, she began dating Bill Clinton, who was also a law student at Yale. Early Arkansas years Rodham co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, a state-level alliance with the Children's Defense Fund, in 1977. For much of that time[81] she served as the chair of that board, the first woman to do so.[82] During her time as chair, funding for the Corporation was expanded from $90 million to $300 million,[70] and she successfully battled against President Ronald Reagan's initial attempts to reduce the funding and change the nature of the organization. Clinton appointed her chair of the Rural Health Advisory Committee the same year,[83] where she successfully obtained federal funds to expand medical facilities in Arkansas' poorest areas without affecting doctors' fees. In one of the most important initiatives of the entire Clinton governorship,[92] she fought a prolonged but ultimately successful battle against the Arkansas Education Association[92] to put mandatory teacher testing as well as state standards for curriculum and classroom size in place.[92] She introduced Arkansas' Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youth in 1985, a program that helps parents work with their children in preschool preparedness and literacy.[94] She was named Arkansas Woman of the Year in 1983 and Arkansas Mother of the Year in 1984. First Lady of the United States When Bill Clinton took office as president in January 1993, Hillary Rodham Clinton became the First Lady of the United States, and announced that she would be using that form of her name.[116] She was the first First Lady to hold a post-graduate degree[117] and to have her own professional career up to the time of entering the White House.[118] She was also the first to take up an office in the West Wing of the White House:[48] the First Lady usually stays in the East Wing. She is regarded as the most openly empowered presidential wife in American history, save for Eleanor Roosevelt.[119] Along with Senator Ted Kennedy, she was the major force behind the State Children's Health Insurance Program in 1997, a federal effort that provided state support for children whose parents were unable to provide them with health coverage. She promoted nationwide immunization against childhood illnesses and encouraged older women to seek a mammogram to detect breast cancer, with coverage provided by Medicare.[140] She successfully sought to increase research funding for prostate cancer and childhood asthma at the National Institutes of Health. The First Lady worked to investigate reports of an illness that affected veterans of the Gulf War, which became known as the Gulf War syndrome.[48] Together with Attorney General Janet Reno, Clinton helped create the Office on Violence Against Women at the Department of Justice. In 1997, she initiated and shepherded the Adoption and Safe Families Act, which she regarded as her greatest accomplishment as First Lady.[48] As First Lady, Clinton hosted numerous White House Conferences, including ones on Child Care (1997),[141] Early Childhood Development and Learning (1997),[142] and Children and Adolescents (2000),[143] and the first-ever White House Conferences on Teenagers (2000)[144] and Philanthropy (1999). Hillary Clinton traveled to 79 countries during this time,[146] breaking the mark for most-travelled First Lady held by Pat Nixon.[147] In a September 1995 speech before the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, Clinton argued very forcefully against practices that abused women around the world and in China itself,[148] declaring "that it is no longer acceptable to discuss women's rights as separate from human rights"[148] and resisting Chinese pressure to soften her remarks.[146] She was one of the most prominent international figures at the time to speak out against the treatment of Afghan women by the Islamist fundamentalist Taliban that had seized control of Afghanistan.[149][150] She helped create Vital Voices, an international initiative sponsored by the United States to promote the participation of women in the political processes of their countries. Traditional duties Clinton initiated and was Founding Chair of the Save America's Treasures program, a national effort that matched federal funds to private donations for the purpose of preserving and restoring historic items and sites,[184] including the flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner and the First Ladies Historic Site in Canton, Ohio.[48] She was head of the White House Millennium Council,[185] and initiated the Millennium Project with monthly lectures that discuss futures studies, one of which became the first live simultaneous webcast from the White House. Clinton also created the first Sculpture Garden there, which displayed large contemporary American works of art loaned from museums in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden.[186] Senate election of 2000 Clinton has served on five Senate committees: Committee on Budget (2001–2002),[203] Committee on Armed Services (since 2003),[204] Committee on Environment and Public Works (since 2001),[203] Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (since 2001)[203] and Special Committee on Aging.[205] She is also a Commissioner of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe[206] (since 2001).[207] Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Clinton sought to obtain funding for the recovery efforts in New York City and security improvements in her state. Working with New York's senior senator, Charles Schumer, she was instrumental in quickly securing $21 billion in funding for the World Trade Center site's redevelopment. She subsequently took a leading role in investigating the health issues faced by 9/11 first responders.[211] Clinton voted for the USA Patriot Act in October 2001, as did all but one senator. In 2005, when the act was up for renewal, she worked to address some of the civil liberties concerns with it,[212] before voting in favor of a compromise renewed act in March 2006 that gained large majority support.[213] As a member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, Clinton strongly supported military action in Afghanistan, saying it was a chance to combat terrorism while improving the lives of Afghan women who suffered under the Taliban government. TAKE NOTE: "should such action be required" Now those who go on about her vote can eat crow!!.... Clinton voted in favor of the October 2002 Iraq War Resolution, which authorized United States President George W. Bush to use military force against Iraq, should such action be required to enforce a United Nations Security Council Resolution after pursuing with diplomatic efforts. In late 2005, Clinton said that while immediate withdrawal from Iraq would be a mistake, Bush's pledge to stay "until the job is done" is also misguided, as it gives Iraqis "an open-ended invitation not to take care of themselves. Clinton voted in 2005 against the confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States,[220] and in 2006 against the nomination of Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court;[221] both were confirmed. In 2005, Clinton called for the Federal Trade Commission to investigate how hidden sex scenes showed up in the controversial video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.[222] Along with Senators Joe Lieberman and Evan Bayh, she introduced the Family Entertainment Protection Act, intended to protect children from inappropriate content found in video games. In March 2007 she voted in favor of a war spending bill that required President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within a certain deadline; it passed almost completely along party lines[234] but was subsequently vetoed by President Bush. In May 2007 a compromise war funding bill that removed withdrawal deadlines but tied funding to progress benchmarks for the Iraqi government passed the Senate by a vote of 80-14 and would be signed by Bush; Clinton was one of those who voted against it. Clinton has enjoyed high approval ratings for her job as senator within New York, reaching an all-time high of 72 to 74 percent approving (including half of Republicans).

Disabled British friend was denied entry to the US because he doesn't work.? My friend has a limited income and has no desire to stay in the US because he receives free medical care and prescriptions at home. He and I have the same disability, which is how we met online. Under the circumstances, does he have hope of getting a tourist visa if my sister, who is financially pretty ok, is willing to sign an affidavit of financial support? He had never traveled outside England before, and the reason given on the official report for his deportation was that he couldn't provide 'compelling enough proof' that he intended to return home. He had a return ticket. They wouldn't even let me see him. I'm ready to see an immigration attorney. Any advice would be appreciated.
Do I have strep?? HELP! ):? So my throat is swollen and I have a white patch that is about the size of a pea on my left tonsil. I'm staying over at my boyfriends house for the weekend and my throat has hurt since last night but I assumed that was just because I had been yelling (it was his high school graduation last night and I was cheering him and others on) but then I looked in the mirror today in the car and noticed the white patch which I hadn't seen before. His mother told us that its probably strep but I don't have any red patches or any more white patches in my throat. I dont have health insurance and my family is poor so I really dont want to have to go and get antibiotics for it. I haven't had many of the symptoms though for strep like fatigue and loss of appetite and nausea so I'm guessing that It's just the early stages of strep? I've been gargling warm water and salt, A LOT and sucking cough drops and washing my hands constantly but my boyfriend still won't even come near me because he thinks he'll get it too. I know its contagious but from what I've read online it says just to not like.. breathe in his face or share food or kiss and the obvious stuff like that but he won't even sit next to me now and he said hes not going to cuddle with me tonight even if I'm facing the opposite way. I really just don't know what to do :/ my dad said he would make an appointment at the free medical clinic in my town tomorrow if things don't change but can someone please give me advice? I came to my boyfriends house this weekend to be with HIM and its killing me that he won't even get near me. :/ :(

how to learn latin by myself? I'm a high school senior this coming fall. I wasn't able to sign up for the Latin courses at my school. I like language in general. I took Spanish 1-AP. I took Japanese 1-2. I took French Intro. Since French and Spanish were very interesting for me, I decided that I would also like to learn Latin. Also, I want to go into the medical field. Latin would be very useful in the scientific field. I'm planning on learning a little bit this summer. Any advice and book recommendations please? (I don't really want to spend too much though. I plan on taking an actual Latin course in college, I just want to learn some beginner stuff.) Please and Thank You! I've heard of Wheelock's, as well as some books available free online with answers.
Has anyone ever called the Animal Poison Control Hotline? http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/ I ask because last night Rocko got into some garlic, and I called the e-vet to make sure I didn't have anything to worry about, etc. They said with the amount he ate and his size that he would be just fine. She told me that in the future I can also call the poison control line if I want to know about possible toxins. So I look them up online out of curiosity and I see this: We are your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435. A $60 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card. What's with the $60 consultation fee??? Why on Earth would I want to call this hotline and pay $60 to hear that my dog is just fine, when I can call a local emergency vet for free? I have no problem whatsoever paying for vet care, but I cannot fathom paying $60 for asking a question. Has anyone ever called the hotline? Is there more to it than just brief medical advice or something? I would call and ask.....but I don't want to pay $60 to find out. =) For the record, if the e-vet had told me to bring him in, I would have done so without hesitation. I have no problem paying a vet when needed, but think that a $60 phone fee seems excessive. For the record, if the e-vet had told me to bring him in, I would have done so without hesitation. Is free-lancing as a computer tech profitable? Hi. I just received my A+ IT Tech Certification a few months ago and would like to freelance repairing home and small business computer systems (and eventually move to offering networking services to larger employers). I look for every opportunity to gain experience, fixing computers for family, friends, acquaintances, & word-of-mouth referrals. Confident that I possess, at the very least, adequate troubleshooting and repair skills in my new-found career, can one make a decent living with this (freelancing) approach or at least start-up this type of work with my lack of experience? I've tried looking for a stable job with a company, but I get very little response. Even call center-type (tech-related) jobs are very scarce. Please keep in mind that I am continuously going to night school and/or taking online courses at local community colleges to enhance my skills. Although my first priority is make a living on a self-employed basis, I am willing to acquire experience by securing a traditional job with a company employer first. However, I am not getting much, if any, response from my job search as I find myself underqualified (at least in paper) for jobs I am applying to, even the entry-level type. Also please keep in mind that I do have extensive experience in an entirely different field -- administrator/coordinator of youth job training programs. Due to my medical problems and following my doctor's advice, I did make a career chance to an area I feel a alot of passion for. My resume does reflect reflect transferable skills achieved through previous career. Any advise/assistance would be greatly appreciated. p.s. Due to my economic situation, I am not able to look for unpaid volunteer-type work.

Feel free not to read if you don't want to but if you can help I would appreciate it? I went to the docs on Fri with joint pain and stiffness and they think all evidence points towards Rheumatoid Arthritis. They sent me for X-rays and blood tests (not medical so don't know what they are looking for in either test) which are due back next friday or the following monday. I'm scared as I've looked online and RA does not look pleasant. I'm only 30 and have 2 babies. I'm so frightened because I don't know anything. I've looked on the internet but it just fuels my fear as I can't understand what they're talking about (medical speak). Anyone out there who can reassure me and give me some real advice? Anyone? Please?
Advice need with vets prescriptions coming into force this autumn? I have been told that if i wish to buy my dogs medication online i will have to start paying 15.00 for each prescription [they are free at the moment] and as i will need it renewed every 3 months charlie will have to have a medical before a prescription is given. Another 25.00. Is there any way around this as i am an OAP and with buying from the internet I could save myself quite a bit of money, but obviously if i have to pay the vet 40.00 every 3 months plus the medication thats more than half my pension away. Any help would be appreciated- thanks I am getting some good answers thanks, but uk is going to start charging for prescriptions and i have checked the prices online. and the reason i know this is because i have checked with my vet
I need MAJOR advice! I am 22 years old and I am stuck living with my mother with no way out!!!!!? I live with my mother, I am 22 years old, I also live with my 15 year old sister and last my 3 year old sister....... My mom has been in relationships that somehow ruined our lives in some way. Now that me and my sister is older were stuck with a 3 year old toddler! Yes I love the new sister........but my 15 year old sister goes to school and no longer helps me because summer is over!!! I have extra chores because of her too! I have been job searching for 6 months and feel my luck is about to change soon...........problem is I can no longer use my mothers phone number as a call back number!!!! In other words she wants a free babysitter right at home. She can't afford day care costs either since its just her! I know if I did get a job she would charge me 300 a month on a 8 an hour job when I have to pay for a medical bill..........it was stress related and now I have this sad 1000 bill, so yea I need a job for that, school, and to save up so I can move out, and with this going on I won't be able to go to college this December!!!!!!!! I will be stuck watching a toddler as my life goes by, my mom says everyday I will be home until am 35 years old.....and she is serious! Things that I have tried: Posting online asking someone could I use their phone number as a call back number, and all they had to do was e-mail me the time of my interview and I would go.........but people think I am a stalker or a nut case who is lying : ( Then the famous question is how can I be online? Um....library and had to walk a 20 min walk with my little sister here! we have a computer, but my mom has a password on it. What can I do??? I found a job where I could watch my sister, but then at night sneak off to work until I save enough to move out! But no phone! we moved to a new state.......I know no one yet. I came from Florida and I am here in Texas now, but even in Florida......my uncle lives off women, my nana decided to keep my other sister because she enjoys going to church......even though she tried to harm me..... so in general no family, and the friends I had there were in worst shape!!! I only have 10 dollars exactly. I know wrong section. I don't feel like an adult at all.......its unfair! Teens even have more freedom then me! My teen years were just as bad!
Online Vets? Why do some people feel this is the place to ask questions that REALLY need to be answered by their vet? Is it because they don't have one? Some of these questions make me so upset because these pets are suffering while the people they rely on to help them are neglecting them. If they are going to go on the internet why don't they go on a vet's website and ask these questions? It is FREE to CALL your vet or an emergency vet so why don't they? What if someone gives them advice that ends up hurting their pet, not everyone on this site is qualified to answer such serious medical questions. I just had to ask why they do this because it is so upsetting to me and makes me so sad for their pets.
Can you help w/ this medical mystery? ? This is long, but there's a lot of spaces, it's copied directly from an online friend's daughter's letter. If you can't help, but know someone that can, or has any ideas, please pass it along and send any correspondence to my email. ********************************************************************************* Can YOU help? I am suffering from acute hepatitis and liver failure. I have been in hospital for over a month now and my doctors are calling me an anomaly. About two and a half months ago I started feeling a little 'off colour'. I put it down to stress (of moving house recently and starting a new job) and the fact that my partner (with whom I live) had been feeling a bit poorly over a weekend (minor stomach ailments, a little bit of diarrhoea) because that's how I had started to feel. Within a week though I knew that it was a little more than that but I had just started my new job and wasn't going to take a day off sick if I could help it. By the end of the first week, I was losing my appetite and feeling nauseous and an intense itching had started. Towards the end of my second week, I had not been eating more than a few bites of food at a time and had had diarrhoea, vomiting and had (unnoticed by me) begun to change colour to yellow. On the Thursday of the second week, my partner bumped into me at a train station on the way home from work and gave me a kiss. As we pulled apart, he started looking at me strangely saying that I looked like I had yellow eyes. Having no mirror, I waited 20 minutes and checked it out in the mirror at home. Sure enough, I had a very definite tinge of yellow to my skin and the whites of my eyes were somewhat worse. That evening, I was vomiting everything that I was eating/drinking including water. The next evening, I went to an NHS walk in centre and they told me that I was jaundiced and to go home and sleep it off and I would return to normal colour within 4-6 weeks. On Monday, after having an entire weekend of no food/water and vomiting bile, I decided that I had to take a day off work and went to my doctor to arrange a blood test. (thankfully ignoring the first doctor's advice of 'going home and sleeping it off') He examined me and found my liver to be tender to the touch and he put slight pressure on it and triggered off a gag reflex. I told him to stop otherwise I would be sick and he proceeded to put a little extra pressure on it and I threw up on the floor(!) He told me to leave the surgery immediately and go and admit myself to the nearest hospital and get myself put on a drip. He prescribed some piriton (anti itching) and some anti sickness tablets. (My doctors informed me that had I not admitted myself to hospital, then I would have died from dehydration/starvation within a week. I am looking at 'multiple organ failure' because my liver, kidneys and gall bladder are under a huge amount of strain.) Within hours of being put on the drip I was feeling better and all of the doctors that I had met until that point told me that had I 'gone home and slept it off' I would have been dead by the end of the week. (My symptoms apparently wouldn't have changed much – I would have just got more tired and more grumpy/irritable which I probably would have put to the hot weather and then I would have gone to sleep and not woken up.) After the first week in hospital in isolation, my appetite was increasing dramatically and I was feeling a lot better. ( I was on a standard saline and glucose drip and all of my vitals were around the normal mark.) My daily blood test results were fluctuating but the only thing that had really changed was the INR (the blood clotting) and that was very slowly returning to normal. By the end of the second week, I was transferred to the Royal Free where I was being quite sick. I was on N-Acetyl Cysteine and the doctors had forgotten to mention that one of the side effects would be severe nausea. They have done 2 X-rays, 2 Ultrasounds, 4 CT scans and one Liver biopsy and they still are no closer to a solution. They want me to stay as a long term In Patient with no plans for treatment. I am feeling physically better now and have done since about the end of the second week in hospital, I am eating lots of different foods (have been for a couple of 3 course meals in the last week, eaten entire roast dinners (and desserts) duck, chicken, pork, eggs, dairy, fish, fruit, drinking around 4 litres of pure water a day plus some milkshakes and other fruit juices) I have been sick once recently and that was due to overeating(!) I had had a three course meal and then decided to continue to eat a huge pot of very acidic fruit. Unfortunately saw the fruit again which was, to be fair, my own silly fault. (but oh, it tasted good!!) My liver no longer feels tender to touch and I cant feel it with my fingers any more even though my doctors are telling m To Lab Rat: It does say she did go to the hospital, tho I don't know which one. She lives in England, is it safe to assume you live there too? I can find out what hospital she is in if you would like.
Considering to join the AF - advice? I'm 20 years old female, almost 21. I'm a sophomore in pre-nursing, that is I will finish my two years of pre-nursing with 70 credits. I will like to complete my BSN while serving the AF. Would it be easy? fast? What are my choices? air force or afrotc?. How is the process in both situations? College courses or online, which ones will be better for the BSN? what jobs will give credits when completing the BSN? for example: Aerospace Medical Service, Surgical Services, etc.. I would like to know some information before calling a recruiter. Please if you have more information in general, feel free to tell me. what about the US Air Force Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP) ?? It is a good idea instead of ROTC? Im not a citizen yet, that is my problem with ROTC.
Do I Have a Chance at Stanford?? Advice? Okay, so I’m a Freshman going into my Sophomore year of high school (4.0 unweighted GPA), home schooled (actually more self taught, my mother can’t keep up with me haha). I REALLY want to get into Stanford University (for premed). I haven’t taken my PSAT, but I will very soon. If I keep this up, do you think I have a shot? These are the courses I've taken so far.... - Anatomy and Physiology - Health - Nutrition (college book) - Biology (college book) - Chemistry - Organic Chemistry (college book) - Biochemistry (online college course) - Physics - Physical Science - Algebra I - Algebra II - Geometry - Trigonometry - U.S. History - World History - European Civilization from Renaissance to Present (UC Berkeley course) - Medical Terminology - Debate class - English Lit - Human Geography (college book) - German (fluent) This year I’ll be taking: - Pre-Calculus - Calculus - Computer Science - Microbiology - Anthropology (college level course) - German (more in-depth, about their language, history and culture) - Art - AP Biology - AP Environmental Science - AP English Language and Composition - AP World History - AP Psychology - Latin - couple other small courses I volunteer at YFU, SADD, Kids With a Cause, Habitat for Humanity, a local tutoring center, nursing home, hospital, cancer advocate, sometimes tutor math and science, babysit, play the piano. (: Thanks! *WILL pick Best Answer. To lizzie23: Oh no, she doesn't. I mostly just teach myself (and I like it that way). :) To lizzie23: Actually I am. We (my mother and I) talked to a professor at our local C.C. and he said all my sciences (including Organic Chemistry), mathematics, history, foreign language, social studies, etc. where well above the high schools standards. neniaf: All I'm asking, is if you think I have a chance of getting admitted to Stanford. You do not have to believe me--most don't...but I swear to you, I have done ever one of those classes.

teen girl with stomach pain and swelling? hi, i'm 17 years old, and i probably shouldn't be looking for answers on yahoo questions, but i don't have health insurance, because i just moved to a new state. i was just hoping someone who had a similiar problem would stumble upon this and help me out. i've always had odd problems with my stomach, lots of distention sometimes, but i never think to bring it up with a doctor. i have a hernia about 7 years ago (when i was 10) and they decided to operate because it was causing me pain. but i was fine, and out of the hospital the next day, no problem. but my stomach cramping has been getting worse. i always thought it was brought on by certain foods, but i've been sleeping a lot and not eating much, and it seems to be getting worse. my menstrual cycle is very odd (i usually get a 7day period every 5-6 weeks), and it's usually rather heavy. but i was two weeks late (meaning i had 1 month and 3 weeks between my last two periods) and it was really light, and not the same as it usually is. my lower stomach has been reaaally distended. i woke up this morning and it was really achy, so while still laying down, i lifted my shirt, and saw that the right side, directly next to my belly button is very, very raised. more so than the left side. i felt and pushed down a bit and noticed a rather large lump, about the size of a golf ball. i don't think it's a hernia, because i have to push pretty deep to feel the shape of it. its tender to the touch and even when i'm not touching it, it aches. i'm really freaked out, because it's never been this distended, especially on just one side. medical history: - hernia 7 years ago, frequent stomach pain and bloating, i guess? - went to the emergency room twice during 2006 because of terrible stomach cramping, appendicitus was suspected, but they sent me home about 8 hours later, after performing an ultrasound and finding nothing. symptoms: - very odd, painful, and light period. ended about two days after it started. - i had awful sharp pains in my right side a few weeks ago, my school nurse sent me home because she was worried it might be my appendix. i read online that it could be an ovarian cyst? but i couldn't find out how long they take to develop. my mother had ovarian cancer, but she went through light chemo and she's fine now, cancer free. any advice or personal stories would be greatly appreciated. thanks for taking the time to read all of this! :) i'm still a virgin, so pregnancy isn't a possiblity.

Name some good US med schools? After having served for some years as a nurse here in Canada, I finally decided to resign soon and begin medical schooling in US. Hopefully all my papers are done by next year. Can you help me decide which schools to apply for? I'm considering UCLA because I can stay with my aunt in California. Other good schools even if not in CA? I searched online and I found very impressive information on lots of US med schools, now I don't know which school is better than the other in terms of faculty, facilities, student body and the "prestige factor". How to promote training courses on survival in the Amazon, a river cruiser and a travel agency in Internet? I need to promote four (4) specialized products and I require advice from people with experience in online marketing and those people that are responsible for the area of promotion, marketing or sales of travel agencies and tourism companies that offer survival courses and cruises. This company is located in Iquitos, an exotic city in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon, one of the least explored and most bio-diverse area in the world. The products I have to help to promote are: 1. Training courses on survival in the Amazon jungle, for companies or adventure travelers. 2. Visits to remote indigenous communities that preserve their customs, for anyone interested. 3. Research or study trips in the Peruvian Amazon, for researchers, students and anyone interested. 4. Travel by river cruises along the Amazon river and tributaries or cruises in Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (the largest reserve in the floodable Amazon jungle in South America). These are quality products. The company respect and teach the travelers to respect the nature. They take medical help or supplies to river communities and indigenous tribes they visit. Trips are designed to understand the nature and their ecosystems. This company works with professional and specialized staff as naturalists and, in case of survival training courses, with instructors of the Air Force. The company weakness is the international promotion and that is my challenge. I have had successful experiences in promoting hotels. But I never promoted this type of product. Therefore, I have several questions: A. Where or in what ways should I promote these four products? B. What websites, especially free of charge, you known to promote these products? In hotels, for example, there are sites like Tripadvisor and others. C. Do you know websites and forums that are focused on "selling" the four travel products I have? D. What social networks focused on these products are available? I know that there are Facebook, Twiter, Flirck, but, do you know any social network for adventure travelers or interested in this kind of trips? E. I was considering using the Lonely Planet, Viajeros and Losviajeros forums. Do you know others forums or specialized forums? Regardless of language. F. Does anyone could help me with the contact details of publishers of travel guides (Lonely, Frommers, Footprints, etc.)? G. I was thinking in contact with TV and film producers or film makers to promote the services of the company and be a strategic partners for films in the Amazon. Where and how I may contact with big producers companies as Discovery, NatGeo, BBC, etc., and with small producers? Do you have any other recommendation?
My recently adopted dog needs dental work? I just adopted a dog. a 7 yr old Chihuahua to be exact. the shelter automatically give s you a free general check voucher to take your dog to get a full check up. well i take him and find out that he has 2 fractured teeth that need to be extracted. i have no idea what to do. the bill is nearly $1000.00. i haven't saved for that amount of surgery. and most insurances that I've read up on say they don't treat preexisting medical conditions. I've tried looking online. and i cant ask any of the vets, I've tried and they keep telling me that since my dog isn't a patient there they cant advise me of what to do. the shelter is closed on the weekends and on Mondays..not sure what to do? i mean i can still take the dog back to the shelter but i really don't want to. the shelter we got him from has a high kill rate..and i don't want to risk that happening to him. any ideas or advice? anything will help!!!! also found out he has a heart murmur...nothing to be worried about now since his pulse and breathing are fine...but something i have to keep an eye out for in the long run... adopted him on monday march 9th took him to the vet wed march 11th had to get him re-checked by a vet who specialized in dental on sat march 14th
Is a notarized legal temporary guardianship form enough to have legal guardianship of a minor in IN? Two and a half months ago my mother was given what we thought was temporary guardianship of my boyfriend voluntarily by his mother. His mother filled out legal forms she found online stating that my mother has legal guardianship of him until the day of his eighteenth birthday. She also filled out legal forms she found online that give my mother permission to get him medical treatment. Both of these forms were signed and notarized by both my mother and his. His mother is currently denying him his survivor benefits from his late father. We have been involved with CPS and were told by them these forms give us the right to claim him on our FS and health insurance. However when we went to social security and the bank to straighten out the issue with the survivor benefits we were told the forms do us no good since they were not signed by a judge. I just want to know what our rights are since she did have these forms notarized and there was no reason to go to court since this is a voluntary situation. Can someone please give me some kind of legal references or advice about my situation. I am afraid once she realizes ss is aware of her keeping his benefits she will try to get him back to keep the money rather than give that money to him. He is 3 months shy of 17. We can prove if necessary the improvements we have made in his life, and his mother was investigated by cps for neglect and abuse and was told to put her 10 year old son in school since she was not educating him and he could not read or write. Right now he is in the process of taking placements tests to see what areas he needs to improve on before starting college. He is also drug free and doing volunteer work so he has more work references to help get a job. Where I live jobs are hard to find esp for minors but he is trying very hard. The only reason the money from his survivor benefits is an issue is because we dont have the money to pay for both of us to go to college and we have been receiving none of these benefits from his mother and he is entitled to those benefits. That's why they are there in the first place. She has been keeping them and spending them herself. She has done nothing for him. Sorry for making this so long I just want to give a good view of the situation so I can get some help. I really need to know where we stand, what our rights are, and what I can do to make this completely legal and sound proof. I have been in touch with legal aid but haven't heard back yet and I just really need to know something. Also, i dont know if it is relevent, but I am 18 yrs old and 7 and 1/2 months pregnant with his son. Thank you very much for any help you may have.
Parents another question about parents going back to college? alright I have another question..for you who didn't read my first question heres the link..feel free to answer: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AopbOicMbWq6i5KlkAu397vsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091123095001AA0g3nk I am taking 3 different courses online right now to get 3 different certificates..I am taking medical transcription, medical claims and billing, medical and dental assistant..but I was thinking about going back to college to become a teacher.. Reasons: I would love to do both but (if I decide not to homeschool) and my children are in a public school than if I do anything in the medical field I won't be there for all the time they have off like thanksgiving break and christmas break and summer break..I will still have to work..but if I am a teacher I can have off all the holidays and summer break with them so I will still always be with them besides when there in school..thats what I would rather do cause I don't want my children to go to a baby sitter.. BUT..the online courses I am taking i am almost done..and going back to college I would have to go for about 4 years to get my teaching degree...I have some courses in but not a lot.. So tell me your opinions on what you would do? I know I have to make up my own mind but I would like some advice please.. Thank you everyone!!
An Atheist with a Problem(s); parents, books, university? Ok, this is a loaded question, please be patient. As the title suggests, I am an Atheist with a problem. You see, my parents are Protestant Christian, right-wing fundamentalists. I had conceivably been raised to uphold the family ideals of Christianity, and of their blind ignorance towards others. Slowly, about while I was 12 years of age, I started to see the truth and apparent error of these ways, and, based upon my years of observation (I am 16-17 now), I have became an Atheist just before my 15th birthday. I sort-of became idle once this happened, but my mind has become more active with age and my experiences. Now to the heart of the problem. As I stated, my parents are fundamentalists who didn't quite brainwash me completely, and I am troubled. I wish to tell them about my Atheism, but I am afraid that my mother, father, and brother will react negatively and become hostile... not the storm the Bastille kind, but the hostile towards my dignity kind. What doesn't help the situation is that they pretty much provide for me in all ways, and I will be going to college in a year and three months, and I will be on their insurance and medical plan until I get my Bachelors. Further hindering, is the fact that I sort of slipped up in my wording of one of my conversations the other night, which was similar to, as follows: ME: 'I had met a believer of Mormonism today in classes, I had an interesting talk with her about her beliefs, and I felt that I could learn more. I always think you can learn allot if you just listen.' FATHER: 'Really, well that sounds pretty good, did you tell her about your [said with an increased tone] beliefs?' ME: 'I told her about Christianity, and Protestantism' As can be seen from that summary, I didn't actually say that I was a protestant, but I didn't say that I wasn't. I like to be really subtle about these things. So I ask, what do I do, this has been on my mind for quite some time, and that last bit of conversation doesn't help either. This is a necessary question to answer, and I would like best if it is from personal experience, but any reasonable thought is acceptable. OPTIONAL: I am fascinated with the different religions out there, and I am trying to study the finer details of these. I would love nothing better than to go into town or online (I found some places where I can get free Chistian Bibles, Tanachs, Qurans, and The Book of Mormon) and get the respective religious 'holly books' for perusal. What is not needed, but would be very much appreciated is that someone give me advice on these books. My parents are afraid that their house will burn down and I will be sent to hell if I even so much as touch another religious book other than the Protestant compilation of the Christian Bible, but I feel that learning about other peoples faith is the key to satiate my eternal hunger for knowledge Finally, thanks in advance to all who reply and many thanks to those who reply due to personal experience. Please don't post anything offensive as a way to 'prove' your beliefs are correct, you will only be made the laughing stock of ANSWERS. Wow, that was a mouthful. As a reply to Bibs' answer, I really wish not to have anyone say "I will pray for you." As a Strong Atheist, I KNOW that there is no god to pray to. All that this tells me is that your answer is discredited by your insanity of talking to an imaginary person. Sorry for all whom I may have un-wittingly offended I meant to say 'holy books'

However, the best flow cytometry software is FlowJo. There is a PC (Java based) and a Mac version. So why am I touting a machine made by Amnis that requires Windows? Because this instrument goes above and beyond mere flow cytometry- it shows you every event (that's cell to non-flow users) in detail. I used it and I am sold. It takes a single experiment now to do intracellular localization, in place of two. A simpler caspase activation assay. What's not to love? Even the computer quandary is solvable (the one feature I'd change: I'd have it run off a Mac) - with an Intel Mac; just get Parallels software, install Windows, and you are good to go, or rather, run. And the ImageStream can run off an Intel Mac this way too. I bought an Intel iMac just for analysis. Installation of Parallels was easy, IDEAS is about as intuitional as any flow software package. And Amnnis reps bend over to be helpful. Don't let the price tag scare you; rather, help write a shared- instrument grant (we did) for your institution to get one. It is simply amazing. From what I have seen, Flow-Jo and FCSexpress are the more commonly used PC programs. Does anyone have any experience with either of these programs? The other option would be to purchase another Macintosh and use CellQuest. However, the best flow cytometry software is FlowJo. There is a PC (Java based) and a Mac version. The Mac version for the moment is quite better. lovesthelab Senior Member United States 807 Posts Posted - July 06 2006 : 4:59:46 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not a PC person, but am an ardent flow person. My flow friends with PCs swear by WinMidi, which is free. If you Google for free flow cytometry software, you'll come to 2 sites, one at UMass, one at Scripps. Lots of free analysis software for the PC, maybe because BD relied on Macs for so long. mlinde Member United States 11 Posts Posted - August 02 2006 : 5:44:55 PM --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As an update, I tried trial versions of FCSexpress and FlowJo and wasn't really happy with either of them compared to Cell Quest. Need help proofreading? “The Government’s Response to Hurricane Katrina” Hurricane Katrina was the most destructive natural disaster to ever hit America. Over 90,000 square miles of land was destroyed, about the size of the United Kingdom. In Mississippi, the storm obliterated coastal communities and left thousands destitute. New Orleans was overwhelmed by flooding. Along the Gulf Coast, tens of thousands suffered without basic essentials for almost a week. More than 1500 people died and not just from the storm alone. Suffering continued in the days and weeks after the storm passed because of the government’s failure at all levels to plan, prepare for and respond aggressively to the storm. In this paper, will explain how the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina greatly affected the nation and the many factors that show the government’s inability to plan, prepare for, and respond to national catastrophes lead to one of the most talked about event in history. The first factor is the long term warnings that went unheeded. Before Hurricane Katrina, government officials knew for forty years of the potentially devastating threat of a catastrophic hurricane to the Gulf region and the destruction it could cause. Government officials had plenty of time to prepare for a catastrophic hurricane but refused to heed the warnings of past hurricanes to the gulf coast. For example when New Orleans experienced flooding in some areas of remarkably similar proportions from Hurricane Betsy in 1965, and when Hurricane Camille devastated the Gulf Coast in 1969 (NOAA/ National Weather Services). When Hurricane George hit the Gulf in 1998, the state of Louisiana to ask FEMA for assistance with catastrophic hurricane planning but little was accomplished in the six years of planning. With six years of planning, the government should have had time to develop and test a catastrophic hurricane plan. In 2004, numerous experts and governmental officials had been anticipating an increase in violent hurricanes, and New Orleans’ special and growing vulnerability to catastrophic flooding due to changing geological and other conditions. If these facts were known, why weren’t plans made in order to prevent a disaster such as this from happening? It seems as though that officials at every level of government did not appear to grasp the magnitude of the storm’s potential for destruction before it made landfall despite strongly worded advisories from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and personal warnings from NHC Director Max Mayfield. Mayfield was so worried about Hurricane Katrina that he called the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi, and the mayor of New Orleans to discuss the effect Hurricane Katrina might have on their regions. Mayfield even talked about the force of Katrina during a video conference call to President Bush at his ranch in Crawford, Texas (Lush). If Mayfield was so worried about the effects of the storm, why weren’t his advice heeded and the necessary precautions taken to reduce the effects of Hurricane Katrina? The second factor was the terrible decisions in the days before the hurricane hit. Some coastal towns in Mississippi went to extraordinary lengths to get citizens to evacuate, including sending people door-to-door to convince people to move out of harm’s way. While New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin only orders a mandatory evacuation of all residents from the city of New Orleans. Yet instead of asking for assistance to help residents who lacked the means to leave the city, he orders the Superdome to be opened as a shelter of last resort. The Superdome proved to be more like a prison than a shelter. More than 20,000 people were forced to reside inside the Superdome without working plumbing, food, water, and other necessities for nearly two weeks. Yet Ray Nagin decided that this was appropriate shelter for those people instead of evacuating everyone out of the city. Hurricane Katrina’s devastating effects were felt before the storm even reached the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005. In the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Katrina battered the offshore energy infrastructure and forced the evacuation of more than 75 percent of the Gulf’s 819 manned oil platforms. Two days before landfall, U.S. energy companies estimated that the approaching storm had already reduced Gulf of Mexico oil production by more than a third. The government knew that if Hurricane Katrina had that much force to evacuate 819 manned oil platforms, that the havoc it would reap on the New Orleans would be devastating. Despite the understanding of the Gulf Coast’s vulnerability to hurricane devastation, officials braced for Katrina with full awareness of critical deficiencies in their plans and enormous holes in their resources. While Katrina’s destructive force could not be denied, state and local officials did not have enough of the resources at their disposal. And even though the Governors of the three affected states requested, and President Bush issued, emergency declarations before the Hurricane hit, none of it actually prepared citizens for what they were about to experience. Another terrible decision was the lack of transportation and supplies. FEMA failed to approach other federal agencies for help with transportation to ensure that the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana had the means to evacuate their citizens. The City of New Orleans was unprepared to help people evacuate, as many buses from the city’s own fleet were submerged, while at the same time officials had not arranged in advance for drivers for those buses that were available. On Monday, August 29, 2005, Governor Blanco asked FEMA Director Michael Brown for buses, and Brown assured the state the same day that 500 buses were en route to assist in the evacuation of New Orleans and would arrive within hours. In spite of Brown’s assurances and the state’s continued requests over the course of the next two days, FEMA did not direct the U.S. Department of Transportation to send buses until very early on Wednesday, two days after Hurricane Katrina hit and the levees had broken, and the buses did not begin to arrive at all until Wednesday evening and not in significant numbers until Thursday (Millholom). By the time the government realized that they needed the buses to help get people out of the city, the levees had broken and most of the people who they intended to rescues had died or were either trapped on top of roofs on untraveled, flooded streets. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin could have prevented many deaths had he gotten people to drive the local buses through the residential areas to save the elderly and the people who had no way out. FEMA could have arraigned for buses from other towns close to New Orleans to rescue the citizens. Yet, these ideas were not thought of when they had two days before the levees broke. The government also failed to communicate properly throughout the entire Hurricane Katrina dilemma. The Homeland Security Operations Center (HSOC) was suppose to provide information about the disaster to decision-makers including the Secretary and the President but failed to create a system to identify and acquire all available, relevant information, and as a result situational awareness was deeply flawed. Yet reliable information on such vital developments as the levee failures, the extent of flooding, and the presence of thousands of people in need of life-sustaining assistance at the New Orleans Convention Center did not reach the White House, Secretary Chertoff or other key officials for hours, and in some cases more than a day. FEMA Director Michael Brown, then in Louisiana, contributed to the problem by refusing to communicate with Secretary Chertoff opting instead to pass information directly to White House staff (Taylor). Moreover, even though senior DHS officials did receive on the day of landfall numerous reports that should have led to an understanding of the increasingly dire situation in New Orleans, many indicated they were not aware of the crisis until sometime Tuesday morning. DHS was slow to recognize the scope of the disaster and that FEMA had become overwhelmed. On the day after landfall, DHS officials were still struggling to determine the “ground truth” about the extent of the flooding despite the many reports it had received about the catastrophe. Government officials did not grasp the need to act on the less-than-complete information that is to be expected in a disaster. DHS leaders did not become fully engaged in recovery efforts until Thursday, when in Deputy Secretary Michael Jackson’s words, they “tried to kick it up a notch”; after that, they did provide significant leadership within DHS and FEMA as well as coordination across the federal government. But this effort should have begun sooner. This effort should have been done when they realized Hurricane Katrina was coming to destroy New Orleans. They had enough time to investigate the reports that were given or to go and get a firsthand look at the destruction that Hurricane Katrina had caused. Another factor was the government’s knowledge that the levees could not withstand a level 4 or 5 hurricane. The levees which prevented New Orleans from being turned into a swamp were built to only withstand Category 3 hurricanes. Officials have known for years that the levees could fail under the pressures of a Category 4 or 5 hurricanes but did nothing to reinforce the levees (CNN). There have been many different sources acknowledging the affects the hurricane would have on the levees. In 2002 the New Orleans Times-Picayune ran a five-part series exploring the vulnerability of the city (The New Orleans Times). The newspaper and other news media as well, specifically addressed the possibility of massive floods drowning residents, destroying homes and releasing toxic chemicals throughout the city. Reuters reported that in 2004, more than 40 state, local and volunteer organizations practiced a scenario in which a massive hurricane struck and levees were breached, allowing water to flood New Orleans. Under the simulation, called "Hurricane Pam," the officials "had to deal with an imaginary storm that destroyed more than half a million buildings in New Orleans and forced the evacuation of a million residents," the Reuters report said (Kahn). If government officials knew that the levees could not stand a Category 4 or 5 hurricanes, then why wasn’t anything done to reinforce the strength of the levees. If nothing could be done to reinforce the wall, why wasn’t a secondary barrier put in place in case of the levees actually breakage? The government had enough time to do something about the levees but instead choose to ignore that it was a structural problem. If the problem had been fixed, many lives and homes would have been spared. Government has since then fixed the levees. Almost a year ago the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers declared that it had restored New Orleans' levees and floodwalls to pre-Hurricane Katrina strength. But yet again another storm weaker than Hurricane Katrina can destroy the levees once again. The new levees sit atop steel sheet piles driven 20 feet (6 meters) into the ground. The piles are long interlocking wall sections that retain water and transfer pressure deeper into the ground, where the soil is more stable (Bourne). But water from holes in the canal bed, excavated before Katrina or scoured by the storm, may be seeping under the barrier through permeable layers of sand and silt. Thus again making the levees a vulnerable target for the next hurricane. The government has spent 3 billion dollars on these levees only to have them possibly torn down again (MSNBC). What was the purpose of fixing the levees if they were still going to have major structural flaws in them that could possibly cause dozens of lives to be lost again? Another major factor is the law enforcement problem that New Orleans faced after Hurricane Katrina. Law enforcement outside the Superdome and the Convention Center was a major problem, and was fueled by several contributing factors, including multiple statements by government officials inflaming the public’s perception of the lawlessness in New Orleans (New York Times). Without effective law enforcement, real or imagined safety threats interrupted every aspect of the response. So without Fearing for their personal safety, medical and search and rescue teams withdrew from their missions. FEMA and commercial vendors of critical supplies often refused to make deliveries until military escorts could be arranged. In fact, there was some lawlessness, yet for every actual act there were rumors of dozens more, leading to widespread and inaccurate reporting that severely complicated a desperate situation (Dyson). Some were looters who were stealing just to be stealing but others were looting for the supplies such as water and food that the vendors refused to bring because of other crime or speculation. Unfortunately, local, state, and federal officials did little to stanch this rumor flow. Police presence on the streets was inadequate, in part because in a matter of hours Katrina turned the New Orleans police department from protectors of the public to victims of the storm as well. Nonetheless, most New Orleans police officers appear to have reported for duty, many setting aside fears about the safety of their families or the status of their homes just to maintain order amidst the chaos. The storm also laid waste to much of the city’s police headquarters and several district offices, along with hundreds of vehicles, rounds of ammunition, and uniforms were all destroyed within the first two days of landfall. Because of this reason, the government shipped out 15, 000 soldiers to enforce the law and maintain public safety (USA TODAY). Crime eventually died down and this was one area that the government actually accomplished something and did it correctly without hesitation. Another factor was the terrible living conditions that people faced while stranded in New Orleans. Over 20,000 people took refuge in Louisiana’s Superdome under unbearable living conditions. The halls reeked of urine and feces were everywhere, a sign of the broken plumbing system; food and water supplies were diminished; and crime ran rampant in the Superdome also known as the “Terrordome” (Brinkley). The Superdome was so packed, that thousands were turned away daily that were seeking refuge from the rising, polluted floodwaters. Many people who were trapped in the city due to the flooding from the breaking of the levees. Flooding in New Orleans drove thousands of survivors to attics and rooftops to await rescue. Some people were trapped in attics and nursing homes and drowned as the dirty waters rose around them. Others escaped only by chopping their way through roofs. Others were sleeping on bridges, cars, and any place they could find that the water could not reach them. The government failed to provide these people with appropriate shelter and when they did provide shelter, the living conditions were deplorable. They failed to provide them with enough food to make sure that they were well fed and not mal-nourished. While authorities recognized the need to begin search-and-rescue missions, other aspects of the response were hindered by a failure to quickly recognize the dimensions of the disaster. Not only did they face terrible living conditions in New Orleans but during the after math as well. FEMA did not even provide adequate temporary relocated homes for many victims who got displaced because of Hurricane Katrina. FEMA offer these people, some of whom lost 300,000 dollar homes, with trailers to live in. Others were stuck in hotels across the U.S. But that didn’t last long, FEMA terminated their contract with the hotels and many people found themselves homeless once again (New York Times). The government didn’t even have a system in place for those who lost their personal information. Many victims found it difficult to reconstruct their shattered lives. In many cases, they had either lost or forgotten basic documents, such as insurance information, birth certificates, and marriage licenses, which would later prove essential to rebuilding their lives. Most of the evacuees did not have access to their medical records, which increased the risk of complications when receiving medical treatment. And many of these citizens were faced with identity theft and no way to prove if they had payed certain debts off. After the government realized that its initial response and the actions it took towards the Hurricane Katrina situation, it releases “The Federal Response to Hurricane Katrina: Lessons Learned”, an extensive review, that identifies deficiencies in the Federal government's response and lays the groundwork for transforming how the Nation - from every level of government, to the private sector, to individual citizens and communities - pursues a real and lasting vision of emergency preparedness and response (Fragos-Townsend). In conclusion, there are a lot of factors that contribute to the government’s appalling response to Hurricane Katrina and destruction that it caused. There are a lot of mixed feelings when it comes to this topic but I think the government has a lot of work to do in regards to creating and implementing a hurricane disaster program. Many things could have been done to prevent Hurricane Katrina from being one of the worst natural disasters in America but it can only provide as an example to teach the government how to be more prepared when disaster strikes. Trichotillomania (my story) plz take ur time and read and help me? name is candice and I am 17. I have struggled with Trichotillomania for over 5 years now. This is my story. In 7th grade (when I was 12) I had long blonde hair down to my waist. I used to get comments all the time about how pretty my hair was and about how everyone wished they could have hair like mine. (No im not concieted...keep reading) Anyways, basketball season ended (LOVED basketball...it was my life for about 5 years) My mom pointed out one day that I had a small bald spot on the top of my head. I told her I knew, but I didnt want to tell her because I didnt want her worrying about me. I guess at the time I had no idea why I had that bald spot, but by now I do..Ill get to that later. Well that bald spot went from being the size of a quarter to about the size of my fist. By this time I was totally depressed because the only thing I loved about myself was dissapearing and my parents were TOTALLY freaked out. I went to one doctor who offered no explanation whatsoever, and sent me home with some medicine (which didnt help, at all.) I soon realized that the reason my hair was falling out was because I was atually pulling it out myself. I dont know why it took me so long to realize this, because obviously I had to be doing it the whole time. I got online one day and did a search at ask.com on hairpulling. TONS of links came up. I did about three hours of reading and found that I had a disease called Trichotillomania.(Trich for short) You have NO idea how relieved I was when I found out that I wasnt the only one who did this. Well it got worse, and worse, and I just couldnt bring myself up to tell my parents. I thought they would freak. Well, time passed and I ended up going to about 10 doctors and ended up taking soooo many pills I thought I was going to die!(none of those doctors offered me any kind of advice and had no clue what was going on) It finally took one doctor to actually make some sense. At first I was TOTALLY afraid of going because I thought he was going to find out that I had Trich. He ended up doing a biopsy(dont know if thats spelled right). It was AWFUL!! he cut out two little circles on my head...to do some tests on them to figure out what it was. He came back with the conclusion that it was a disease called Alopecia Areata. (a disease where people lose their hair for no aparent reason...they dont pull it out like me)...anyways for the next several weeks I went once a week to get 40 steroid shots in my head. (They were supposed to make my hair grow back...It didnt work) By this time I was in 8th grade and I ended up getting my hair cut really short, thinking that would make my hair look better. It just kept getting worse and I cried every night and tried to make myself stop pulling but I couldnt..it was pretty bad. I got really depressed because I went from having a lot of friends in school to practically none. I became the kid everyone made fun of.Im not sure why, but I kept what was happening to myself, I didnt let anyone know that I had a medical condition and that was why I had "weird hair." I just decided they werent worth the trouble. I ended up telling my church friends that I did have a medical condition and thats why I lost my hair. (I didnt tell them what it was...Nobody knew the real reason for my hair loss at that time.)Even though I found it easier to tell people about my hair, I still couldnt tell my parents that I had Trich. I found out later that I was going to be moving to a new town...that made me so happy...because the kids at my school were still really bringing me down. Anyways, we FINALLY moved, but I was scared to death about what would happen when I started a new school. I knew that my hair would never grow back by august and that I would NEVER be able to stop pulling, so I ended up shaving my head and getting a wig. I wore a wig all through 9th and 10th grade. In January of 10th grade I stopped pulling for about 7 months. My hair grew back, and when I started school in August I was able to go to school without a wig. Everyone was surprised to see me with real hair and it looked great for a while. It came back thick, curly, and blonde. I started pulling once school started, and now I am missing a ton of hair. It is now June 2003 and I'm having a very hard time. I hate knowing that this time last summer I was 5 months pull free and doing fine...and now I'm doing horribly. I now have a large spot on the back top part of my head and I can't wear my hair down because the sides are SO thin there is very litle hair covering it. I'm very worried about how things are going to go within the next couple of months, because I have to take my senior pictures...and in those pictures I have to wear my hair down. I know they will end up looking really bad, and it upsets me a lot. basically at this point, things aren't going very well for me. I'm at one of the lowest points I have ever
