Online Medical Classes

Is there financial aid available to do medical transcription from an online school?

I am interested in seeking a certification in medical transcription so I can work from home, but do not wish to go back to (& can't afford to) school full time for 2 years to do so and would like to get certified from a course such as Career Step or similar. I wondered if there is financial aid available to help pay for that?

  1. just a word of advice. My mom does medical transcription at home but i wouldnt get into it err shes afraid soon they wont have these jobs available because they started sending the tapes to a different country because its cheaper and she also told me that soon theyll end up having computers doing it instead so they dont have to pay people... No idea when that would happen but she told ME not to get into it haha. Goodluck though
  2. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by financial aid but you could apply for a Sallie Mae Career Training Loan. If you do not qualify for that then Career Step offers a payment plan. Career Step is a great program and you will be able to find a job when you are done. That is where I got my training. As far as voice recognition (where computers do the work), it will never completely eliminate the need for transcriptionists. I have been a transcriptionist for a number of years and editing reports that have first gone through voice recognition for the past 3 years. I love it!!! Less wear and tear on the wrists (ie, carpal tunnel). In the future, transcriptionists may be doing more of this rather than typing out the entire report but they will definitely still be needed. Trust me! Doctors mispronounce words all the time, most are horrible at grammar and many doctors have heavy accents, mumble or talk too fast. It is impossible for computers to create a perfect report with all of these things to consider.

  4. It depends on the school. Financial Aid can get a little complicated with online schools, but there are plenty that are authorized to offer a variety of Federal and State financial aid programs. Of course, other schools aren't. Generally, when a school DOES offer financial aid, they will say so. If getting Financial Aid is really important to you, consider "shopping around" for an online college until you find one that definitely offers financial aid. Make sure you give them a call to find out how to qualify (i.e. if you have to take a certain number of classes, etc.). A site I've used... http://www.BestFinancialAid.info/ Hope that helps.
