Online Medical Classes

How do at-home medical transcriptionist get paid?

I'm thinking about taking an online medical transcription class and I was wanting to know if you work from home, how do you get paid? what i mean by that is, do they pay you by how many reports you do or what? And what do you make on average? If you are currently a medical transcriptionist, do you like it?

  1. I was a medical transcriptionist for several years, and sadly, this occupation has been on the decline for a few years now. Most work is outsourced and done elsewhere (outside the US) for only 2 or 3 PENNIES per line. It used to be good money, but not any more. You'll find TONS of info here: http://www.mtdaily.com/ Go to their information section in the middle of the main page and click on "MT FAQ," which will take you to this page: http://mtdaily.com/faq.html Another terrific site that's FULL of information including message boards for you to communicate with more MTs is here: http://www.gomdt.com/ From their main page, click on "Forums," and that's where you'll be able to post more questions if you like. I don't say this to pat myself on the back but rather to illustrate how badly the industry is doing - I was one of the BEST at my job with never less than a 99.9% accuracy rating, and my income STILL dropped to only one-third of what it had been just a few years ago. Unfortunately, I would NOT recommend getting into this business anymore. I left the business myself after finding a different line of work that still lets me stay at home and work the hours I want. I just couldn't AFFORD to transcribe for a living anymore. I know you'll find all the information you need at the sites I listed above. You'll be in good hands there. Good luck to you! Julia
  2. Some transcriptionists are becoming editors, checking the work of others, particularly the work that's sent abroad. What I'm hearing in the industry though is that the India experiment is not as successful as previously thought. The physicians I know don't want their dictations sent out of the country. More info on the website below, not affiliated with any school or products for MTs. There's a forum there also for additional input.
