Medical Transcriptionist? Online courses?
I'm wanting to talk an online course to be a medical transcriptionist. How will I know the course is legitimate? And once I'm done with the course do I get certified or licensed? And information would be great. Also the places I've looked said I could work from home. Is it easy to find the work at home jobs?

- The major bulk of medical transcription work in the U.S. has been greatly curtailed by state privacy laws as it pertains to medical records and patient confidentiality. The vast majority of medical records are kept in recordkeeping departments within medical centers and any transcription work is done "in-house," not "outsourced." So, beware of any offers which promote online in home medical transcription work--there are scammers out there. Good luck!
- 1) Ask the school if they have partnerships with companies who actually hire their grads. If they say they do then get a list and call the companies and ask them if the school does in fact have such a partnership. Many schools say they are "affiliated." This means nothing unless they are affiliated with companies who hire their grads. 2) Yes, you can work from home. Most larger hospitals and clinics outsource their transcription department to medical transcription companies. You receive voice files via secure servers, transcribe the reports and they are returned to the facility via secure servers to be stored by the hospital/clinic by the method of their choice. 3) Unless you receive your training from a school who can actually place you in a job, it is very, very difficult to get that first job. After you have 2-5 years verifiable experience getting a job is usually as easy as posting your resume on one of the MT job bank sites. 4) The majority of MTs do work from home. This is one of the few legitimate work at home jobs but it requires training and, as I said before, getting that first job.
