Online Medical Classes

Do online medical transcription degrees really work? Do you have the same opportunities as a college grad?

Thinking of schools like Allied, Kaplan, US Career Institute. Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

  1. I did medical transcription for about eight years. I have recently left the industry. I did not have a college degree and you do not need one. You can use career step, which is a medical transcripton school and most of the big national transcription companies do hire from there. Make sure you know the facts about the medical transcription industry before you spend your money. Kim http://www.trillion-dollar.com
  2. Medical transcriptionist jobs are going away quickly, due to a voice recognition system called Dragon. Many positions are being converted to Medical Editor or in some places, eliminated all together. Fortunately, I am in a union shop, so worst case scenario is that I get retrained at their expense and still make $33.00 an hour. Other than getting the terminology, I think most transcription courses are a total waste of time. It gives the the most basic of basics, but I cannot tell you how many online school 'graduates" that I have had to totally retrain, or ones who quit, because in the real world, dictations are not clear and concise like the ones in school. Not trying to discourage you, just giving you the reality. Transcription jobs are becoming fewer and far between, and it isn't like it was 10 years ago, when you could write your own ticket.
