Spitting in a puppy's mouth to create deeper loyalty?

I had heard this in the real world. Was interested to see what info might be online. It's mostly some folks asking innocently "has anyone heard of this before?" and a whole bunch of (I can ONLY assume 12 year olds) 'ewww' answers, and 'that's so weird!' answers. Oh, grow up! First it's not getting dog spit in a persons mouth, but the other way... and dogs eat poo and all kinds of grossness given the chance, so spitting in their mouth isn't mean to them. Does anyone who cares to answer have any actual knowledge about Animal Behavior? NOT vet. medicine, that's like asking a surgeon for psychological advice when a therapist is clearly the better source of advice. Animal Behavior-wise this makes sense with regards to bonding/nurturing/dependence. Also, I keep seeing it as a 'wives' tale', which is only half true. I got a flat tire and the tow driver who came was Native American. He had a dog in the truck. It was a beautiful, well-behaved dog and we began chatting about pups. This is how I learned that it's an ancient Native American practice to engender deep and lasting loyalty, that along with regular training and love, a few weeks of spitting in your puppy's mouth will make him/her loyal to YOU above all others. Anyone done it, or known someone who has? obviously (as I initially included) this idea would be above and beyond the proper, care, training and love that you would give a dog. Those things are a given. No one who would consider trying this is likely to be anything but a committed dog person already. No, you don't open a dogs mouth and hock into it.... dogs lick at their masters face and chin often. Apparently the thing to do is take this plea for reassurance/diplay of affection as a chance to give them a little spit.

  1. Deep loyalty comes from caring and feeding a training a dog. Who ever wuld do that would get more from a dog that spitting in it's mouth once or every day. Think about it.
  2. I'm not 12- I'm 34 and ewww. There's no truth to that. What creates loyalty is taking good care of your dog and giving it love. Spitting in a dog's mouth is no different then saying that you'll get warts by touching a frog.
  3. Dogs aren't baby birds that need regurgitated food... And I'm not aware of ANY animal that "bonds" through swapping sputum. It's more of a "new idiot's tale" than an old wives tale, in my opinion.
  4. Spitting in a dogs mouth, err no. Feeding a dog, walking, respecting it, and a lot more cause a dog to be loyal to it's pack leader.
  5. I have no idea. If it works for some people I certainly am not one to judge. I have done some odd training with my dogs that makes people look at me with raised eyebrows....... What does it hurt? All I can say is I would try it but I am a terrible spitter. Seriously, when I spit out a piece of gum it lands on my shoe. Pitiful.
  6. I would jus' say..........eeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwww
  7. Yes, i have heard of this technique as well as others that are closely related. First off, the breed of the dog depends on its temperment (of course) and for smaller breeds i do not reccomend spitting in their mouths as good discipline , as for larger breeds some swear by it while others then have MORE problems with their dogs. I do not see this technique useful at all and do not think a dog should be spat at. Good luck!
  8. Tell whoever told you this that the ultimate form of loyalty is to have the dog spit or drool in their(the owner's) mouth and swallow it. Dogs don't like getting their mouths spit in, so how in the world is forcing their mouths open so you can spit it in creating loyalty? As for seeing wives tales as half true, I know 95% of them are 100% bogus. Edit:"This is how I learned that it's an ancient Native American practice to engender deep and lasting loyalty, that along with regular training and love, a few weeks of spitting in your puppy's mouth will make him/her loyal to YOU above all others." And there's a lot of Native American Folklore that's total crap.
  9. What a load of CRAP ! you get loyalty from your dog by being kind to it - don't listen to these stupid tales, even if the old american native indian did this, its outdated and old.
  10. Like blood sisters??? kinda loyalty friendship thing??? thats what is sounds like to me.... and I am going to reply with an EWWW that is gross. My dogs have all been pretty damn loyal with out me spitting in their mouths. I do not think many if not any one, would have done this in this day and age, yeah maybe back then thats what they believed, but that kind of thing wont fly in todays society. It is in fact completely gross and definitely unneeded. It actually makes me feel a little queezy to think about. How does it make sense?? really, I'd like to know how you think that??? BTW... about that ewww.... im 20
  11. I am sorry but this is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
  12. I really don't see how it could work. I mean, maybe the dog gets a taste for your spit? I don't know. The well behaved, beautiful dog was probably more as a result of treating it like a dog, and not like a human, and proper raising, rather than slagging in its mouth. I guess it's an old custom, which they attribute to the dogs over all behaviour. I mean, it wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't spit in my dogs mouth. It's a moving target, and I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if it was right in front of my nose! EDIT: My dad apparently spat in one of his old dogs mouths, and they were well bonded, and he was a great dog till some ass hole nicked him. I don't know, I still see it as an old tale to explain the way dogs behaved when they were properly raised.
  13. I've never heard of that before. I'm not even quite sure how that would work :S
  14. The only explanatino of why this would work would be that it makes them loyal becuase the old wild dogs would have a pack leader, and, as you can imagine, the leader problably got slober all of the other dogs so the dogs take the spit as a meaning of higher power, so buy you spitting in there mouth it becomes the natural instinct to what they were used to in the wild, i don't know if it does work but if it does that would be the only explanation i have, i wouldn't suggets trying it though i would stick to just playing fetch with it.
  15. I'm answering you by opinion only, but I think that the idea of it alone is asinine and repulsive. Creating loyalty takes time, work, and lots of love and trust. Spitting into the mouth of a dog makes no sense to me whatsoever. By the way, don't open a doggie day care business - you'll have no clients after asking that one... (smiles)
  16. There of tons of things people will do because its their tradition, does not make them right, nor does it make them wrong. A well trained dog who is socialized with others, and happens to spend a LARGE amount of time bonding with their owners is what makes them loyal. Here is a guy that runs/operates a tow truck service and maybe owns his own repair shop, he has a dog(maybe he has more than one)which is with him 24/7 a true companion. Because he deals with a lot of people the dog is social and friendly, because he feeds, waters, and cares for the animal it is loyal to him. If he is a good dog owner he takes the time to train the dog, so the dog knows he is in charge and is the leader. Would spitting in the dogs mouth make a difference probable NOT.This is a pretty harmless practice, kind of messy though, and fairly safe. There are some cultures who beat their dogs to make them loyal to them. Someone posted a question on answers a while back about something her dad had told her about mongolians doing this, most of us would shake their heads and never try it, because it could make an aggressive dog. My mother told me that to make a dog loyal you feed it a lock of your hair(?), her very German father, was taught that by his father. Its a old wifes tale as many things are, doesn't stop people from doing them though, so I say if it is not going to hurt your dog go for it. Just do not expect it to actually work. By the way, never tried the hair thing, or the beating and The spitting one is just to gross(spit, drool, ect. Makes me nauseous).
