Do you know if hospitals or surgeries in the UK get medical reports transcribed overseas?
Do our hospitals get their doctors letters and reports transcribed overseas like the USA does for many years? Is it possible to find a list of such hospitals or who can tell us about this side of hospital services? Is anybody here have any knowledge of medical transcription services or involved in such a service? good answers all. called BUPA and hope to get some news frm them. Thanks. Agree with Peter, i have not seen any outsourcing for transcription in hospitals in my region.

- I suggest that you contact BUPA. They should be able to help you fully answer this question
- Yes, the NHS gets all their letters etc written abroad. I belieive the NHS's current country of choice is the Philipines. Doctors dictate their reports/letters, then this is put onto a computer whizzed halfway across the world, typed up then whizzed back. Its all anomynous, the patient is only identified by their hospital number. I think some small doctor's surgeries may have local typists, but its pretty rare nowadays. Just thought i'd clarify a few things, number one i'm a she!. I'm studying at St Georges Hospital in London, one of the biggest hospitals in the uk. I've also found some info about other hospitals that outsource their dictated transcription; http://www.thisiskent.co.uk/tunbridgewells/Medical-letters-sent-India-Maidstone-Tunbridge-Wells-NHS-Trustarticle-765213-details/article.html http://www.e-health-insider.com/news/item.cfm?ID=1961 http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2004/aug/18/medicineandhealth.lifeandhealth I'm not saying that overseas transcription is good, just that it is done.
- I don't know where samkins is doing his training, but in my former hospital, one of the largest district general hospitals in the country, the consultants in all specialties had secretaries in the hospital, who transcribed their dictated letters. I never heard of NHS consultants relying on overseas transcriptions.
- our local hospital apparently has them typed up in india they have or are thinking of stopping it tho due to the mistakes. thats just what i heard from someone working there i dont have first hand experience
