  1. I have also heard some bad reviews about Ashworth. Many people who have enrolled said that the customer service was horrid, they dont file your turned in work on time and therefore keeps you behind because they are so late to actually grade the work. I suggest Everitt Community College. I was accepted there last year but decided to do the on campus thing. Also remember to make sure the program is accredited which will help you get a job with employers.
  2. NOTE: this is about Ashworth vocational certificate programs and not about their academic degree programs. I have different opinions on the two - they are very different animals. I've heard bad things about Ashworth too - but never from anyone that actually took a class there themselves. Always some "friend of my friend's cousin's brother said." I took a vocational program there and liked it just fine. The material was good, the customer service was all I needed, it was fine. And, it was cheap compared to most other places. Legit? Yes, Ashworth is accredited by the DETC which is recognized by the US Dept. of Education and the CHEA as accredited. They aren't Harvard, Princeton, Yale, or even your local State U - but you knew that already. You're going to hear that they're "a scam" because their credits won't transfer to your state U. Well, nobody's credits in medical transcription (or any other vocational certificate) will transfer to your State U either. It's not because it's Ashworth - it's because those courses aren't equal to university courses no matter where you take them. The thing is, you don't need a vocational certificate for jobs at that level. What you need is experience. No amount of classwork will replace that need - so it's really hard to find a job in those fields without the experience. The vocational certificate simply gives you an edge over other people with no experience and it offers you some knowledge. Some people think they can take this short course for a few hundred dollars and they'll immediately find a job paying $50+ an hour (or can make millions working from home on their computer in their spare time) and that's just simply not realistic. Ashworth never promises any such thing but then these people call them "a scam". http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos271.htm is the occupational outlook handbook entry on the profession. The middle income for that job is $12-17 per hour. That means half make more and half make less. You guessed it, beginners starting out make less. Those with no experience at all make the least and it's a touch hard to find a job. None of that is the fault of schools like Ashworth though - that's the nature of that profession. pfogarty: a couple schools on that list are not accredited at all - and at least one is generally considered a diploma mill. You can't rely on web pages that determine which schools are "good" based on whether they pay to advertise on the site.
  3. I have made a list of online medical schools if that is any help. You would need to look at them yourself to see if you can find the course you want - but at least you will know the college is accredited. # American Intercontinental University Online - Bachelor's Degree program in Business Administration # University of Phoenix online - Health Care Services and Nursing # Kennedy Western University - self-paced programs available in 19 disciplines # Baker College online - Healthcare management # Clayton College of Natural Health Online # Jacksonville University Online - clinical instruction # Regis University Online - MBA in Health Care Management # Western School of Health and Business of Health and Business – lots of different healthcare programs
