How Would I Legally Obtain Necessary (Controlled Substance) Items For a Basic Field Surgery Kit?

I can find all of the instruments like sutures, gloves, scalpels, etc on medical supply stores online, but I can't figure out how to buy Lidocaine Hydrochloride Injections? (This is administered as a local anesthetic). You can't order it unless you are a medical doctor with a DEA license. I'm sure other people are putting these kits together who are not doctors. I'm also pretty sure I calling my MD and asking for a 'scrip isn't going to get me anywhere either. I am not putting together a field surgery kit for "fun" and would never use it unless in an emergency situation. In addition, the circumstances during which it would have to be accessed would be such that lawsuits would be the least of my concerns. There are field surgery kit checklists out there which list the basics of what you would need, and Lidocaine hydrochloride is one of the items on it. Obviously someone is able to obtain this item, whether your own personal opinion (which by the way is not what I asked for) is that they *should* obtain it or not. My search continues....

  1. There is a good reason for that. Lidocaine can be misused and it needs to be used by an appropriately trained specialist so as not to cause harm to the patient. The FDA do not restrict drugs and access for the fun of it, there are extremely good reasons. And should you get you hands on some and cause harm (regardless of intent) i would hate to see the lawsuits coming your way. Edit: It is not a personal opinion , it is my professional opinion as an employee of Pfizer pharmaceuticals who make Lidocaine Hydrochloride injectables.
  2. thats right, lidocaine in particular has a cardiac toxicity. so if administerd improperly (accidentally into a vein, for instance) it can cause heart arrythmias and other such issues. There are over the counter topical anesthetics which do contain lidocaine as a substituent. Look for these topical anesthetics as an alternative to the controlled Lidocaine HCl injections. -I would also note that if you arent cleared with a MD liscence, and thus do not have access to Lidocaine, that chances are that it is not safe for you to be attempting any sort of "field surgery". Best to leave that to those who are certified and protected from malpractice.
  3. Unless you are an MD with a DEA number, you can't. It's illegal. Why would you want one, anyway?
