Online Medical Classes

Is Health Information Management B.S. looked down upon for Med School (DO/MD)?

Currently I am finishing up my second year at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I was a Kinesiology major however now I have just applied to the Health Information Management program at UIC. Keeping my options open of course, I've been checking out other institutions that offer the same B.S. degree. I've found that DeVry University offers the program online, on-campus, or a combination of both. I know that as far as choosing a major goes, medical schools welcome them all. However, honestly, where does my desire to do a B.S. in Health Information Management stand amongst the other majors? I know I have to do my pre-med requirements which I am almost done with. Also, if in case I do not get admission into UIC's HIM program and I choose to go over to DeVry's, would choosing the ONLINE option of completing the degree affect my chances of being admitted into med schools? Are online degrees looked down upon? Is DeVry University looked down upon? Any info would help! =)

  1. Stay at UIC if you want to go to medical school or DO school. HIM won't include coursework essential to your medical school application, or practice as a physician, so I don't understand why you are changing majors unless you want to work in medical records. Transferring to an online program will seriously reduce the competitive nature of your medical school application.
