Online Medical Classes

what's the difference between medical office management and health information management?

Which would be a better degree to get. What online colleges would you recommend?

  1. Medical office management refers more to clinics or individual departments within a hospital - similar to an office manager position. Health Information Management (HIM) is a mix of medical records, physician credentialing, information technology and occasionally CMG (clinical mixed group) coordination (sometimes even coding is in the HIM department). Its designed around a shared services model (all clinical departments within a healthcare facility use the same HIM department). The higher paying jobs are usually in HIM. In a large hospital the director of HIM can expect 6 figures.
  2. Medical office management is just that, while HIM has more to do with managing patient records and accounts. (You're more likely to find HIM in hospitals rather than doctor's offices.) MT Advantage Career Center offers an excellent Medical Office Management certificate program which teaches all the ins and outs of managing a medical office. You might want to take a look there if you're interested.
