Is an associate degee or an certificate better to land an medical adminstrative position?

I am currently taking a certificate program online in medical secretary but my instructor told me in order to be more marketable I should consider getting the associate degree. I just want to land an entry level position in a medical office to gain experience then go from there. If anyone worked as a medical secretary or any front office position in a medical facility, how did you get started in the profession and if you went to school before earning the position what did you earn? Do you think it is a waste of time to earn a degree in medical secretary?

  1. I know people who work in similar positions and most of them have gone the associate degree route. It will be easier to get the job with an associate degree. Best of luck with your plans.
  2. It definitely is not a waste of time to earn a degree as a medical secretary. Because a medical secretary must know more about the medical field than just a general secretary, getting your AA degree will greatly enhance your chances of getting a job, even if it is entry level. The degree will also help you to advance. In my younger days, I tried several times for a medical secretary posistion but without education, training and experience in that field, I had no luck. Go for the Associate's degree. You'll be glad you did. Good luck to you!
