- Medical transcription is listening to recordings of medical professionals (doctors, nurse practitioners, etc) which are dictated onto a tape or computer file, and then typing the report of what is dictated. The report you type then goes into the patient's medical file. You have to know medical terminology and of course be a good typist. You use a computer shorthand program that turns abbreviations you create into complete words or phrases, which increases your typing speed greatly. The small company I work for downloads the dictations to me over the Internet, and I type them and upload them back to the office. They are then uploaded to the hospital where they are stored in the patients' computerized medical records. I think using tapes and paper reports is becoming less common. In the US, anyone can own their own company. You can work for yourself as a one person company, or you can employ others. You would need to file incorporation forms with the state you live in. The hardest part would be getting customers. You have to convince the hospital or doctor's office that you are fast, accurate and reliable in getting the reports completed, while charging a competitive rate for your work.
