According to dictionaries online, it means (1.) science of law, (2.) the branch of philosophy concerned with the law and the principles that lead courts to make the decision they do, (3.) a body or system of laws dealing with a specific issue or area sample sentences with this words: 1.) He was more a student of jurisprudence than a practitioner of the law 2.) The great problem for jurisprudence to allow freedom while enforcing order 3.) Medical jurisprudence I don't understand any of these definitions. Can someone explain to me what jurisprudence means (in simple english, almost as if u were explaining it to a child) Thanks!

  1. Basically, people who study law -- not as in the actual written laws, but the whole process and philosophy behind law as an abstract or concept, often as a way of approaching dillemas concerning law. Another good example sentence: "the great problem for jurisprudence to allow freedom while enforcing order." Jurisprudence is, in itself, a word to describe something fairly abstract, so to make it any more clear is quite difficult.
  2. It's what is "behind" the law, or why a law was made in the first place. There is much history behind how each and every law came into being.
