I am interested in hearing the pros and cons of British and Canadian healthcare?

With the election in the US, I am interested in hearing more. Of course Michael Moore played up UK and Canada healthcare as so much better than ours, but I recognize that is palp for movies. I am interested in the real story. The NHS in the UK and national healthcare in Canada seem like a great idea, but has been a hard sell here in the land of lobbyists. Thank you for your answers!

  1. Great idea but that's all that it is. Canadian Health care provider living and practicing in the US. To put it simply Canada's health care system is expensive (taxes pay for it so people don't see the cost involved and many believe its actually free), many services are just not available or wait is horrendous. The Canadians who defend it have either never had a serious condition that needed immediate care or don't know better because they have never experienced anything else. For procedures here in the US where you wait a week or two, you would have to wait 6 months to 1-2 years if they even decide to do it. Many problems go undiagnosed and no referral to specialist it ever made. It breaks my heart to see my family members up in Canada who need help but can't get it. Its ironic how they defend their system and constantly remind me its better than the US system because its free.
  2. My doctor left the USA and worked in a large clinic in London for two years. When she returned she said "We do not need socialized medicine in the USA" Everyone pays even if they don't need care, so there is little incentive to try to be healthy, just run to the clinic. Anything government does is always done the most expensive and least efficient way. It is not free, and It is a jungle of bureaucracy and waste. I don't know myself, just what my doctor said, for what it is worth.
