Looking to get into the healthcare field without a lot of schooling?
I am have been a loan officer for the last 15 years and was interested in changing careers into the healthcare field. I have a degree in history already, and I am married with a 4 year old boy. So I do not want to go to school again for 4 years + until I am sure I really like the healthcare field. I was thinking about taking a CNA course or EMT basic course any suggestions?

- Go EMT before CNA. Of course, an associates in nursing takes 2 years and, in many states, is enough to start making a full nurse's salary. With student loans the first year, and possible grants the next year (once your income is gone), you might be working as a nurse before you miss your income too much. ALSO- if you don't want to work with patients that much, you could look into working for a medical insurance company, as a claims rep approving/denying claims, etc. (applying the same skills you have gained as a loan officer).
- CNA & EMT are both considered entry level health care positions. Both jobs can be physically and emotionally demanding, and the pay is very low. However, if you are financially secure, and have the means to supplement your income - why not? Patient care isn't for everyone - but if you find you enjoy working with people, the personal gratification of the job will far outweigh any other negative aspects. Also, if you enter a hospital / long term care setting as a CNA - keep in mind that with the health care provider shortage, your future employer may offer the option of advancing your education through tuition reimbursement. Since it is obvious your family is important to you, consider returning to school on a part time basis. Granted, it takes longer to graduate - but in the long run, it may be a win-win situation for everyone!
