Is this a smart move in healthcare?
My girl friend is getting ready to start her required courses in order to enter the medical assisting program at the community college. (Gwinnett Technical school of georgia near atlanta) She would like to take a nursing program once finished with medical assisting and after she's worked for a couple years in that field. Is this a good idea?

- Yes, getting into healthcare is a good move in this time. Healthcare is still growing in the US. Part of the reason is the aging baby boomers generation (they will need a lot of people to take care of them!). Everybody is hurting these days, even healthcare institutions. Some are freezing hiring or pay raise. But it is still much better than other sectors of the economy. So it is actually a good time for her to be at school. Perhaps after two years, when she graduates from the program, the economy will pick up again. Read this for nursing shortage: http://www.aacn.nche.edu/Media/FactSheets/NursingShortage.htm Talk to people, there are a lot of opportunities in healthcare other than nursing.
- Yes that is a very smart move. I am also taking online classes for 3 different courses. I am doing Medical and dental assistant, medical transcription, medical claims and billing. I would also like to further my education in a few years and become maybe an RN or LPN. Tell your girlfriend I said good luck!
- Yes, but she should apply to the nursing program after 6-12 months of working as an MA because some programs have a long wait list. At least this way she will be working while on the wait list.
